NIKE Men's Air Zoom Structure 24 Sneaker
About this deal
DPT/Footwear Science: B+ ( Solid stability design, but some claims regarding cushioning that are not supported by evidence and feel of the rearfoot midsole) The Nike Structure 24 is a unique offering as a firmer and durable shoe in an industry that is getting softer and short-lasting. My major suggestion is to continue to delineate this as a stability shoe given the amount of lateral bias from the medial resistance being so noticeable. My other suggestion would be to consider lightening the shoe up. Although my size 10 weighs in at 10.8 oz, which is slightly lighter than the 23, it still feels a little clunky. Part of this may be the fact this shoe needs time to break in (which is rare for footwear in today's world) but for a ride so firm I would expect this shoe to be lighter. While the firmness does add inherent natural stability, it may turn people away from this shoe upon initial try-on. So I would suggest softening the ride just a bit. Not enough to take away from the inherent stability, but enough to make it a little easier to transition into it.

Kulmala, J. P., Kosonen, J., Nurminen, J., & Avela, J. (2018). Running in highly cushioned shoes increases leg stiffness and amplifies impact loading. Scientific Reports , 8 (1), 1-7.
Last year, while testing the Structure 23, I thought that it was only good for slower-paced, easy or recovery runs. This year, I intentionally took the 24 out on faster-paced runs (between 4.30 and 5 minutes per km) and its performance was stellar. The Structure 24 is much more versatile than I thought. There’s also a small Zoom Air unit in the forefoot of the Structure 24 which is only situated under the ball of the foot and doesn’t cover the entire forefoot like in the Vomero 16 and the Pegasus 38.

If you already have the Structure 23, the Structure 24 is a version that you can skip. If you don’t have the Structure 23, the two versions are so similar that you can save money and get the 23 instead of the 24. Version 23 is lighter and has exactly the same ride as version 24. It’s one of the only Nike trainers to use CMP 010 foam in its midsole which I prefer to the more popular React foam. It’s an EVA foam which feels softer and more spongy than dense, rubbery React foam. Overall: B+ (A unique firm ride in today's soft world for those who need a little more room and medial mild stability without posting )It was a bold move for Nike to transform their last textbook stability trainer into a supportive, neutral trainer. Nike’s research must have indicated that the number of runners wanting a supportive, neutral trainer outweighed the number of runners wanting a “true” stability trainer. The Structure 24 is the same price as the Pegasus 38 but is more comfortable and more stable so I’d choose the Structure over the Pegasus even though it’s the heavier shoe.
